Audio Streaming - Significance of Audio Streaming
By Sean R Mize
You have two options when it comes to playing an audio file online. One is to download the whole file completely and play it using a media player. Another is to play it while the data is being sent by the server of the site you're in.
If you don't want to wait or don't wish to download a file just so you can listen to it a couple of times, the latter option more likely appeals to you. This option is audio streaming. It works with the audio file being downloaded into a buffer. The next step involves sending the data in the buffer to the sound card. Just after a short time of downloading, perhaps a few seconds later, the file begins to play. The audio can be heard, and if your Internet connection is fast enough, the file will play with no noticeable gaps pauses until it ends.
What is the significance of streaming audio? For one thing, it allows live broadcast from internet-based radio stations. Because they are not limited by the geography they're in, these stations can afford to focus on playing a genre of music that normally will not be profitable enough for traditional radio stations.
You can also listen to music being played by radio stations all over the world as long as those radio stations have an equivalent counterpart. Imagine listening to music from some exotic place on the other side of the world, in real time. If you're working abroad and getting homesick, feel right back at home while listening to your favorite station back in your country.
Aside from music, you can also use audio streaming to catch up on the latest news on internet-based radio as it happens, where it happens.
